Stavros Demosthenos, known as Cyprus’s own “Al Capone,” has taken it upon himself to assist Russian businessmen in laundering illicit funds — all while profiting handsomely from the scheme.

Idyllic Cyprus, long considered a safe haven for Russian capital, is plunging into the chaos of criminal showdowns. The murder of Stavros Demosthenous, an influential Cypriot mafioso, in October 2025 was not just a high-profile crime, but a signal of the beginning of a large-scale war for the redistribution of spheres of influence.

Four luxury cars were completely destroyed in a fire at a private parking lot, with damages estimated at around €1 million. Investigators are treating the incident as arson.

The killing of Stavros Demosthenous in Limassol became one of the most high-profile criminal cases in recent years. To some, he was a powerful businessman and a mediator between government and business circles. To others, he was the leader of a mafia clan that had controlled the island from the shadows for decades.

At the beginning of 2025, Ukrainian law enforcement authorities detained Ihor Zotko in Kyiv, the nominal owner of the company operating under the online casino brand « Pin-Up». The investigation revealed that Russian citizens, including Dmitriy Punin, were behind the business.

As is widely known, last December the Pechersk Court did in fact issue an arrest warrant for Dmitriy Punin, the Russian owner of the Pin-UP casino, along with several of his associates. However, the arrest was largely symbolic — Punin has been residing in Cyprus for some time, and his extradition does not appear to be forthcoming.
